The Hawke’s Bay Community Orchestra was formed in 2015. The community orchestra is for adult players who are getting back to playing orchestral instruments after a break, taking up a second instrument, or starting from scratch. We have players who have been playing from 1 year to over 50 years. All are welcome to join our friendly, supportive, and welcoming community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rehearsals are held at St Peter’s church in Hastings on Saturday mornings 10am – 11.30am. The orchestra, includes string, woodwind, brass and percussion players, and rehearses a range of music from classical to more contemporary arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We perform at a number of different venues throughout the the year including rest homes, theatres, and open air concerts. We have very talented soloists, duets, and other ensembles performing music across all musical genres making music that appeals to everyone from the young to the young at heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HBCO is very fortunate to be conducted by Teresa Cuthbert, a primary school teacher with 27 years experience and a lifelong passion for music. She teaches music to all students at Napier Central School, introducing a different instrument each term and engaging children in conducting, composing and listening activities. For the past 18 years, she has conducted the school orchestra of around 50 musicians, who regularly perform at local early childhood centres, rest homes and in biennial exchanges with Waipukurau School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clarinettist by training, Teresa plays with the HB Orchestra, Bay City Symphonic and Napier Tech Band, and is now also a key percussionist with Bay City Symphonic Band, where vibraphone is her favourite instrument. In 2019, she founded the Napier Tech Junior Band to support young musicians. Growing from 7 to over 20 players aged 9\u201318, it builds essential band skills. Semi-retired since 2023, Teresa continues teaching, conducting and inspiring musicians of all ages across Hawke\u2019s Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All adult musicians are welcome to come along and join us. Our mission statement is \u2018A group of orchestral musicians who gather to enjoy making music together. All are welcome.\u2019 If you\u2019ve thought about dusting off that instrument that\u2019s been lying in the. cupboard for years, then now is the time do so<\/p>\n\n\n\n
